Why Paint Correction Always Comes Before Ceramic Coating
A ceramic coating is semi-permanent glass over your paint. Coat perfect paint and you've preserved perfection for years. Coat swirled paint and you've preserved the swirls — under a layer that must be machine-polished off to fix them. Sequence is everything.
The Physics Of The Problem
Ceramic coatings — professional systems from the likes of Gtechniq and Gyeon — cure into a hard, transparent film bonded to your clear coat, lasting years. Transparent is the key word: every swirl, scratch, and etch mark under the coating remains fully visible — arguably more visible, since the coating's gloss amplifies how light plays across the surface. And because the coating now protects those defects, removing them later means machine-polishing away the coating you paid for, then re-coating. Correction after coating costs double; correction before coating costs once.
This is why every Top Star ceramic package has correction built in — single-stage on the 1-Step, compound-and-polish on the 2-Step — and why a coating quote without correction in it is the loudest red flag in Las Vegas detailing.
The Correct Sequence, Start To Finish
Decontaminate
Foam wash, iron remover, clay bar. Both the correction and the coating need chemically clean paint — bonded desert grit sabotages each.
Correct To The Paint's Need
Light swirls: single-stage polish. Etching, oxidation, dense webbing: two-stage compound and refine. The paint's condition — not the package price — decides.
Panel Wipe
Prep solvent strips every trace of polishing oil. Skip this and the coating bonds to oil instead of paint, failing from underneath within months.
Coat The Perfected Surface
The ceramic locks in a defect-free finish — preserving exactly what you want preserved, for years.
Maintain Correctly
Proper wash habits keep new defects from accumulating on top of the coating. The full desert regimen is in our maintenance guide.
How Much Correction Does Your Car Need Before Coating?

|---|---|---|
| Brand new / near-perfect | Light polish — even new cars carry dealer-prep swirls | 1-Step Ceramic |
| Typical daily driver, light swirls | Single-stage polish | 1-Step Ceramic |
| Visible webbing, water etching, dulled dark paint | Two-stage compound + polish | 2-Step Ceramic |
| Oxidized, neglected, moderate scratches | Two-stage, possibly spot wet-sanding | 2-Step Ceramic |
| Peeling / failing clear coat | No coating — needs paint work first | We'll refer you honestly |

The 'Coating Special' Red Flag
Las Vegas sees a steady supply of same-day 'ceramic specials' priced below what legitimate correction alone costs. The math only works one way: no correction, minimal prep, coating applied over whatever the paint looked like that morning. The customer discovers it the first time direct sun hits the hood — spider-webbing, now glossier and sealed under glass. Everything to ask before hiring any installer is in our choosing-a-detailer guide; the one-question version is simply: "What correction is included, and how do you verify it before coating?" Watch how fast the conversation changes.

“A shop quoted me a 'ceramic special' half of Top Star's price. Asked their one question — no correction included. Went with Top Star. My black paint under sun is flawless glass.”
“They corrected two days before coating my Lexus and showed me every panel under lights first. Now I understand what I actually paid for. Perfection, preserved.”
“Learned this lesson the expensive way elsewhere — coated over swirls, had to have it all polished off. Top Star redid it in the right order. Night and day.”
Correction + Coating FAQ
Unless your paint is genuinely defect-free — rare even on new cars, which arrive with dealer-prep swirls — yes. The coating preserves whatever it covers for years. Some level of correction before coating is standard practice at every reputable installer.
New cars still get at minimum a light polish in our packages, because transport and dealer prep almost always leave marring that the coating would otherwise seal in. It's the cheapest correction the car will ever need — the paint has never been better.
The swirls remain fully visible under the coating — often enhanced by its gloss — and are now protected by it. Fixing them requires machine-polishing off the coating, correcting the paint, and re-coating: paying for the job twice.
Light marring on top of a coating can sometimes be refined out of its surface, but defects under the coating cannot be reached without removing it. That distinction — on top versus underneath — is the entire reason sequence matters.
One day for the 1-Step package (single-stage polish plus coating), one to one-and-a-half days for the 2-Step (two-stage correction plus layered coating). All performed at your location in the correct sequence.
Yes — the coating's prep requirements (decon, panel wipe, perfect surface) are already satisfied by the correction, so bundling eliminates duplicated work. It's why our ceramic packages are structured as correction-plus-coating rather than coating alone.
Yes: we machine-remove the old coating, correct the paint properly, and re-coat in the right sequence. Send photos and we'll scope it honestly — including whether the existing coating is worth preserving instead.
